Christchurch Earthquake Update
On 22 February Christchurch was attacked by a savage magnitude 6.3 earthquake. The inner city and Eastern suburbs suffered severe damage. The death toll currently stands at 169, with 200 still missing; the inner city is off-limits as buildings crumbled like paper and are still unsafe; and the Eastern suburbs of Christchurch are struggling with limited power and water. Unfortunately all Christchurch city beaches are now unsafe due to the sewage released into the ocean, and will be off-limits for some time. Check out stuff.co.nz
for more earthquake news.
Thankfully, the Seventhwave premises and our staff escaped major damage or injury. A fence down here, a few cracks in the pavement there, but otherwise the shop and factory are both safe and operational. Our thoughts go out to all those worse off than us, and those who are still struggling to get back to normality.
The people of Canterbury, and Christchurch businesses, need your support now more than ever. Here at Seventhwave we are rearing to go and ready to serve your wetsuit needs; whether it be repairs or a new wetsuit for winter. Our online store
and online custom fit service
means you can support Seventhwave from wherever you are, without having to dodge potholes and cones to get here!
In the mean time, here's some earthquake escapism for all of us with the earthquake wobbles.
Big Wave Surfing... At Night
After two years of planning, Australian big-wave charger Mark Visser has finally achieved his dream: surfing the infamous Hawaiian big wave break 'Jaws' at night. With the aid of two helicopters, a jetski, and custom gear engineered with LED lights, Mark tackled 30 to 40 foot waves... at 2AM.
The lights created for the project used ground breaking NASA submarine lighting to ensure the wave and board were lit in the right places, without hindering the vision of the crew. "It was the scariest, but most exciting thing I have ever done,” says Visser. Watch the craziness here
Slide, Sadhana & Seventhwave
The latest Slide Magazine
is out now — featuring a swag of interesting surf stories and photography — and if you look closely, a number of Seventhwave wetsuits. There's a great interview with Christchurch-based Jay Jackman, board-builder extraordinaire and founder of Sadhana Surfboards
, which features a pic or two of our very own staff member and surf junkie, Tom Owens. In 'Celebration Trimular', Matt King talks us through the Taranaki Festival of Longboarding and flaunts his MAX steamer in style. Be sure to grab a copy.
Surf to Summit
Over five action-packed days in September, four keen skier/surfers drove, choppered, ferried, flew, surfed and skied the length of the country from Cape Reinga on Day One (September 14) to Bluff on Day Five (by midnight September 18). The mega-storm that rocked New Zealand that week made for last-minute itinerary changes and a dramatic final surf on a snow-covered Southland beach.
Seventhwave made sure the team stayed warm with their very own MAX custom-fit steamers, which also came in handy when the team caravan got stuck in deep mud! Look out for the TV show, airing on C4 in February and playing on Air New Zealand in-flight. In the meantime, here's the trailer.
I spent the 2010 summer canyoning in Europe, both guiding and recreationally
. The European canyoners grunted through the canyons in 7mm one piece or 5mm two piece suits. I danced through the canyons in my Seventhwave Viper 3/3
— what a dream it was, with many envious onlookers! For the glacier-fed canyons I was toasty warm with a Hot Top
and neoprene shorts underneath and comfortable from start to finish. Cheers Seventhwave!
