September 2010

Spring is in the air here in the Southern Hemisphere.

On Saturday, September 4th a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Canterbury at 4.35am. The devastation was extensive - over 400 people are unable to return home and there is over $4 billion worth of damage. The worst earthquake in recent history to hit a major New Zealand city: old buildings crumbled, chimneys toppled, and liquid sand rose. Huge cracks across roads and through houses, water mains and sewers broken. Power lost almost everywhere. Frightening aftershocks. But no one died.

Seventhwave and our staff came through unscathed, and we are up and running at our new premises. However our thoughts go out to all of those who have been hard hit by the earthquake.

Seventhwave now in new premises

Seventhwave have moved. In fact we'd just finished moving the day before the earthquake hit. We are located at 243 Dyers Road, Bromley (next to the Caltex Petrol Station) about 3kms from our old premises. We are open, fully operational and it's safe to visit! New signage coming soon — watch this space.

The earthquake and continuing aftershocks (over 720 of them in the last 18 days) have been taking a toll, with emotional distress equally as large as property damage. Water quality has also been an issue — safe drinking water is still not available for many, while a number of surfers have stayed clear of the surf for fear of contaminated waters.

To get an idea of what the quake and aftershocks have been like, check out this amazing time-lapse map of the activity.

How you can help - Earthquake appeal

Students, neighbors and family have been mucking in and helping each other out, but for many the costs involved are too great to bear. The New Zealand Red Cross have set up a Canterbury Earthquake Appeal and are accepting donations, which will aid those in financial need. You can donate online at www.redcross.org.nz.

Feedback from across the ditch

Here's what Nicole Ireland, first-time surfer from NSW had to say about her Seventhwave wetsuit after purchasing it in 2009:

quote.gif I am very pleased with my Seventhwave wetsuit! I've been learning to surf and it is keeping me warm in the cold conditions we've been having. If the custom-fit service was not available online then this would have been an obstacle, but it was easy to order online with good follow up. I like that the suit is made to measure and I was able to ask for specific designs, colour etc and it was interpreted the way I wanted. My suit is handmade (artisan) and fits like a glove!

Great service and follow up — it feels good to be wearing a good quality and respected wetsuit that not everyone else in the water is wearing. Thanks for your great product!"

Cape Classic - Tauranga Bay

The Westport Cape Classic 2010 is looking good: 20 years of the Cape Classic with $7500 cash and more sponsors product up for grabs. King Kapisi and the Nomad playing at the after party and T-Bay with a nice a-frame bank forming — the comp is set to go. Get down, over or up to Westport for the best Classic yet.

Now is the time to check and service your gear. If you have a problem wetsuit, let us know and we’ll advise the best remedy. If you wetsuit needs a medical, send it in and we’ll give it a maintenance service. Even the best gear can suffer from high-mileage and over-use fatigue.

We love feedback, good and not-so-good; it’s the only way we can improve so don’t hold back. For the latest in pics, vid, and blog action, visit us online. Seventhwave online changes daily.

See you out the back,
The Seventhwave Team
