May 2011

Greetings from the 'wobbly' city. The aftershocks have nearly disappeared. Now we have tornadoes in Albany. What next. Osama lost his magic invisible spell. Taylor's Mistake now has un-polluted water. Yee ha! Lets go surfing.

THE LINEUP:

Reduce, reuse, recycle...
Jay_Balsa_small.jpg

Jay at Sadhana Surfboards has come up with a creative and charitable way to reuse debris from the latest Christchurch earthquake. Using timber from a demolished factory that once stood behind his shop, Jay has shaped a 6’3” Balsa Fish to represent the 6.3 magnitude quake. From May 9 this beauty will be auctioned on Trademe—the money raised from the auction going to the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Check out Sadhana's Facebook page for more pics and updates.

Triple-X-rated Wipeouts

Check out the five incredibly brutal nominees for the Verizon Wipeout category at the 2011 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. In the end it was Mark Mathews' two-step dance at Shipsterns Bluff that took top (or is that worst?) honours.

Melanie in Hawaiian motion

It's not everyday we see our wetsuits live on the world stage, so we've been following the progress of Seventhwave ambassador Melanie Bartels on the Women's World Tour with great interest. Narrowly missing out on a finals spot at Bells Beach, Melanie came to Taranaki amped and ready to roll, but a hard 4th round heat against Paige Hareb ended her NZ campaign. However a few days ago she got one up on Paige at the Layne Beachly Pro in Sydney, and at the time of writing, was into the quarters. Follow her progress in Sydney live here.

Feedback: straight outa' Santa Cruz

quote.gif My MAX G&S 3/2 Steamer is the BEST — it's light, thin, flexible and warmer than any other 4/3 wetsuit I've worn. Because of the Yamamoto rubber I can practically see my suit drying after use, which which is sweet because I travel a lot and it sucks to carry around a wet wetsuit.

I have had O'Neil, Rip Curl, Billabong and this is seriously way more comfortable than all three! It doesn't bunch up or give you awkward rashes, and it doesn't peel off you when the set waves roll through. It doesn't even feel like your waring a wetsuit it's so light and flexible, but it still keeps you warm in the coldest conditions. I am stoked on my Seventhwave custom-fit wetsuit — its definitely the best wetsuit I've ever owned!"

FlowBarrel in Christchurch?
Flowrider.jpg

The water quality in Christchurch is slowly becoming safe to surf in. But we think something like this FlowBarrel® at Jellie Park still wouldn't go astray. Just in case we ever get one (Red Cross donation maybe?), here's a video to show you how to pull off a back flip. Too easy.

Now is the time to check and service your gear. If you have a problem wetsuit, let us know and we’ll advise you the best remedy. If your wetsuit needs a medical, send it in and we’ll give it a complete maintenance service to extend its use-by date. Even the best gear can suffer from high-mileage and over-use fatigue.

We love feedback, good and not-so-good; it’s the only way we can improve so don’t hold back. For the latest in pics, vid, and blog action, visit us online. Seventhwave online changes daily.

See you out the back,
The Seventhwave Team
