July 2011

Hello from the city that keeps on moving and shaking. Now that the shortest day has been we can count down the days to Spring and the Rugby World Cup. Ye ha!
This month we take you surfing in video-land, from the Kaikoura Cold Water Classic to the length of New Zealand with the Surf to Summit team. Or how about your own Spanish Wavegarden? Plus some eighties nostalgia 'Surf Nazi' style and more great feedback.

THE LINEUP:

Surf to Summit: ski & surf NZ in 5 days
Surf-To-Summit-Small.jpg

Surf to Summit: a world record attempt to ski and surf every day for the length of New Zealand from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

In September 2010, Alex Herbert, Tom Dunbar, Maria Kuzma, and Angus Kebbell drove, choppered, ferried, flew, surfed and skied the length of the country from Cape Reinga to Bluff in five days. Their mission: to surf and ski on each day of the trip. The 100 year storm that rocked New Zealand that week made for last-minute itinerary changes and a dramatic final surf on a snow-covered Southland beach. Luckily they had Seventhwave wetsuits to keep them warm! Check it out here.

Surf Nazis Must Die (1987)
Surf-Nazis.jpg

After an earthquake leaves the California (Christchurch?) coastline in ruins and reduces the beaches to a state of chaos, the 'Surf Nazis' take advantage by fighting off several rival gangs to seize control of the beaches. However they meet their match in the form of 'Leroy's Mama'—a gun-welding grandma. Arming herself with guns and grenades, she breaks out of her retirement home and sets out to exact bloody vengeance on the Surf Nazis.

The film is a cult classic of bad taste, bad acting and poorly staged special effects. One reviewer wrote: "Not even the actors' relatives will find this interesting." Well we do! Watch the hilarious trailer here (NOTE: content is R16).

Feedback: who needs batteries?
Brenton_Fisher_waves.jpg

quote.gif My MAX Ti G&S ZB Steamer is awesome. My mate had the new Rip Curl HBOMB and my MAX was on par with his, except I didn't have to charge batteries after every surf! I could have stayed in the water for hours. There was almost zero water penetration, a little bit would creep up an arm or leg every now and then but that was it. No cold flush down the back which is awesome. The water temp was 9.8 degrees...

It was amazing how there was zero penetration of the cold through to my skin—I could have been sitting at home on the couch with normal clothes on, that's how comfortable I felt. Combine that with the hood and I was laughing. Crew could not believe I was only wearing a 3mm suit. Once again thanks, the suit is awesome.

Kaikoura Cold Water Classic 2011
Cold_Water_Classic_2011.jpg

2011 saw the O'Neill Kaikoura Cold Water Classic run for the 34th time, with a variety of waves on offer at Meatworks and Mangamanu. The South Island weather was slightly warmer than usual, while Kaikoura's stunning scenery and some hot surfing kept spirits high—especially in the Junior section. The Seventhwave bus was there and captured the action.

Wavegarden: waves in your own backyard
Wavegardenimage.jpg

Got an empty paddock, pond or lake, and some expendable cash? Wavegarden technology now allows for environmentally friendly wavepools to be developed in your own backyard. Testing has been happening in a secret location in Spain, with both pro surfers and pint-sized groms sampling the goods. Have a look at their website for more info, or watch their video here.
